Delsea's Billy Janzer eases through districts, ready to ramp up for regions and states

It wasn’t that Billy Janzer wasn’t trying. Or that he was wrestling with one hand tied behind his back. But the Delsea Regional High School junior and his Crusader coaching staff went into last weekend’s District 31 tournament with bigger goals than just wrapping up a district title. Janzer, who won district and region titles and finished third in the state as a sophomore, pinned his way to his second District 31 title, including decking Absegami’s Andrew Marcucci in 2:35 of the 170-pound final. The performance earned Janzer Most Outstanding Wrestler honors.

Delsea wins a drastically different District 31 for a sixth straight year

The Delsea Regional High School wrestling team hosted the District 31 Tournament on Saturday and for the sixth straight year came away with the team title. But as much as things remained the same, it was a much different tournament than usual. Other than Pennsville, all the other teams were different from a year ago because of the NJSIAA's drastic district re-alignment.

2017 District 31 wrestling recap: Janzer captures MOW as Delsea wins 6th straight

Delsea hosted District 31 and won a sixth consecutive team title despite only two teams - Delsea and Pennsville - remaining in the district from a year ago. The Crusaders crowned five champions - Edison Echevarria (120), Nick Bennett (138), Seth Summers (152), Billy Janzer (170) and Tommy Maxwell (195). They placed nine overall in the finals, which is the number they will take to Region 8. Delsea had 227.5 points to Highland's 183. Highland had been the dominant team in the District 30 Tournament the last few years, winning four straight. MOST OUTSTANDING WRESTLER: Delsea junior Billy Janzer won his second district title and has his sights set on a second region crown and a first state title after placing third a year ago. He pinned his way to the District 31 crown on Satruday.

Junior Billy Janzer leads Delsea wrestling by example

Nobody can argue with Billy Janzer’s wrestling chops. Delsea's junior 182-pounder, a Rutgers University commit, is currently ranked second in the NJ.com individual weight class rankings. Last season as a sophomore, Janzer captured his first district and region titles and finished third in the state. In the off-season, he placed third at the Cadet Freestyle Nationals in Fargo, N.D., to earn All-America honors at 170 pounds.

WRESTLING: Teams to watch this season

Even without Brad Dobzanski, a first-team All-South Jersey selection last year who will focus on baseball, the Crusaders will be in the mix for the Group 3 crown. Billy Janzer took third in states last year and will be one of the region’s best – as should Edison Echevarria. The latter reached the fourth round of wrestlebacks in Atlantic City after his regional title. A name to watch is freshman Tim Spatola around the 126- or 132-pound range.
